How To Use The Pro-Align Putting Aid

Whether using in or outdoors, the technique is the same.

The first thing you want to do is check your alignment. Here’s a simple test to see how square your putter face is to your aim line. You’ll need another person to help you out with this test.

1. Select a target, straight out, about 5 to 10 feet away from your ball.

2. Line up and address the ball like you’re getting ready to putt. But don’t putt!

3. Have the other person slide, or rotate the Pro-Align in place so that the Alignment Bar is directly over the ball, the ball is in front of the Support Arm, and the putter face is parallel with the Support Arm. It should look like the photo to the right.

4. When you get to this point, back away, stand directly behind the Pro-Align and look at where it’s pointing. It should be pointing directly at your target.

If it’s not, don’t worry, most golfers “think” they have their putter face square to their aim line. But in reality, it only “looks” like it’s square to their line.

Try this on your friends, and you’ll see how many people don’t square their putter face up to their aim line.

For more information on this, go to the Why It Works link.

To use the Pro-Align:

1. Select a hole to putt at and read the break. Indoors, pick a target to putt at.

2. Insert the Pro-Align into the green at the position you want to putt from. Indoors, set it in the base.

3. Rotate the Pro-Align until the Alignment Bar is pointing directly down your intended aim line.

4. Set the ball in the proper position. The back of the ball should be in front of the Support Arm and directly below the Alignment Bar. When looking down at the ball from address position, you should see equal halves of the ball on each side of the Alignment Bar. See fig. 1 to the right for proper ball position.

5. The next step is to set the putter down behind the ball. When you do this, ensure that the putter face is parallel with the Support Arm, see fig. 1.

You now have:

  • A visual representation of your aim line
  • Proper ball and eye position
  • A perfectly square putter face to your aim line

Hit some putts now and see if you are any closer to the hole. If not, go to the Fix Your Stroke link and see how to fix those pushed and pulled putts.

If you are hitting your target, keep practicing this and focus on the alignment before each putt. Follow the Alignment Bar all the way to your target and back. Try to engrain the feeling that “This is what this putt looks like. This is what a square putter face feels like.”

Now when you get on the course, you’ll know what it looks and feels like to have proper alignment.

Take the Pro-Align to the course and use it before each round to help you find your alignment and your putting stroke.
